For 32 years, I’ve been immersed in the world of mattress manufacturing, design, and customer service at the production level. My journey began when I was looking for a career change, and an opportunity opened up as a production worker. Knowing it was a great place to work with excellent people, I jumped at the chance. What started as a job quickly turned into a lifelong passion for craftsmanship and quality sleep solutions.
Decades of Hands-On Experience
I’ve worked from the ground up—designing, building, and refining mattresses to fit the needs of countless customers. From standard models to complex custom builds like boat mattresses with unique bevels and shapes, I’ve had the opportunity to solve unique design challenges. Along the way, I’ve developed and implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for multiple mattress lines, ensuring consistency, durability, and long-term quality in every build.
Watching the Industry Evolve
The mattress industry has changed drastically since I started. Here are some of the biggest shifts I’ve experienced firsthand:
✔ From Two-Sided to One-Sided Mattresses – Once the standard, two-sided mattresses disappeared as the industry moved to single-sided builds in the early 2000s.
✔ The Waterbed Boom & Bust – Waterbeds had their moment, but as consumer preferences changed, traditional mattress styles took over.
✔ The Rise of Pocketed Coils – Once a niche option, pocketed coils now dominate the industry. They provide better customization and comfort balance, making them perfect for the DIY community.
✔ Fire Safety Regulations (CFR 1633) – I was directly involved in testing and adapting mattresses when fire safety laws changed, ensuring compliance without sacrificing comfort.
✔ Memory Foam & Hybrid Evolution – Memory foam was once a must-have, but over time, hybrids and modular designs have taken center stage due to their adaptability and durability.
✔ Adjustable Bases & Air Mattresses – Adjustable bases are more popular than ever, allowing for customized sleep positions and support. Air mattresses have also carved out their niche for those seeking versatile sleep solutions.
✔ The Box Spring Reinvention – Traditional box springs once had springs inside them, but now we know that firm, stable support is best—mimicking the floor for optimal mattress performance.
